We got to sleep in until 8 AM today!!! That hasn't happened since week one in Athens and it was especially fabulous because I went to bed at 1 ... so a solid 7 hours! Woo. We ate some breakfast and then the laundry guy pulled up on his vespa with a little locker full of laundry on the back. It was really funny; so European. It was 8 euro, but I am thrilled to have clean clothes to put on - washing them in the sink with detergent is a quick fix, but everything dries so stiff.
At 9:30 we took cabs up to the college, just like yesterday. Maybe I've just gotten used to the driving, but it wasn't nearly as treacherous as our first ride. Today's lecture was mostly about politics in Northern Greece and a little bit of media and pop culture. We discussed the "Macedonian Question" much more and I might write my research paper on it.
A big charter bus picked us up from ACT and drove us an hour out to Vergina. We ate at a sort of buffet taverna, where I got risotto pasta in tomato sauce for 5.50 euro. It was so delicious! We've all noticed that the bread up here is much better than down in the south of Greece. It was cool too though because once you paid, a guy would carry your tray out to the tables. Nice service.
Then we went to Phillip II of Macedon's tomb and it was probably my favorite site thus far. It was just buried under this huge mound hill, so kind of amazing that it was even found. The tomb is so ornate and crazy to think that it was build in B.C. times. We saw the actual tomb and all of the gold, weapons, etc. that were inside. I appreciated the value to my cultural heritage. Afterwards I stopped by a little shop and got a ring with the Macedonian symbol on it. It was a little pricier than I'd usually spend on a ring, but something so authentic and personal is worth it!
We got back to the city and ran in the supermarket for some wine and snacks. I've just been hanging out for a couple of hours because we're all pretty tired. Tonight we are going out to the bars and hopefully will find a club to go dancing at! Apparently all of the really popular clubs moved out by the airport because of summer noise regulations in the city. So we thought about going out there, but found out it would be 20 euro each way for cabs, so that got vetoed pretty quickly.
We are running down the street to grab gyros for dinner and then getting ready to go out!
I'm going to post some pictures tonight!
